Old Thinking Gets Old Results
OLD THINKING GETS OLD RESULTS
Thoughts
Over
the years we have been sold on the idea that a once a year check up
was all that was necessary to maintain health and longevity. As time
changes we are finding that is an old way of thinking and that level
of thinking will eventually help you develop disease not prevent it.
Recently in a Men’s Journal (August 05) article Men were
put to the test. They surveyed men to see what Health issues they
were most concerned about.
1) 53 % concerned with overall
fitness
2) 8.8 % concerned with heart disease
3) 8.3 %
concerned with joint and muscle pain
4) 7.6 % concerned with
nutrition
5) 7.6 % concerned with longevity.
After
reading this article it was very apparent to me that the once per
year check up philosophy has destroyed the thinking and actions of
men ultimately causing more sickness and disease in a group that
wants to be fit. I know i
t may seem absurd however, please give
me a few minutes to clarify.
The once per year check up
ultimately creates a smoke and mirrors magic show. John shows up at
the doctor and gets a physical. As long as his check up is normal and
he gets the pat on the back from his doctor, he probably will not
think about his health for the next year. This level of thinking
stops John from being concerned with his health therefore allowing
potential disease to develop until he gets a bad check up then he
will become concerned for his health.
When you look above,
less then 10% of men are concerned with longevity, nutrition and
heart disease. By not being concerned ultimately means they will not
act on improving these areas until a disease shows up. This is why
men do not live as long as women and in general are less healthy.
Sorry for picking on the men. I have a license to considering I am
one.
The once per year check up worked in the 1950’s. That
level of thinking does not work in this era. If you look at our
history, heart disease, cancer and general health have worsened every
year since 1950. At some point we must recognize that the once per
year check up philosophy could be causing the problem.
We
must stop waiting for the check-up to be positive and start being
concerned for our health on a daily basis so we do not end up with
the disease. I would assume if you interviewed 10 men with
debilitating heart disease at 60 they would be CONCERNED.
